This trip is ideal for families, recreational hikers and train enthusiasts wanting to enjoy the world famous Grand Canyon Railway and to also camp below the rim! You may choose to spend one or two nights camping rim top or below the rim in combination with your ride on the rails.
Your journey begins in historic Williams, Arizona, where you will board the famous Grand Canyon Railway for your transportation through the country to Grand Canyon Village. Your Discovery Treks guide will meet you at the village depot and lead you to the trailhead for your journey into the Canyon. Staying below the rim is truly an adventure. Whether you want to enjoy one night 3,000 feet below the rim or two nights with a visit to the Canyon floor and the Colorado River, we can create this trip for you.
On the one-night trek, after your arrival at the depot, we go straight for the trailhead. After equipping you with your backpack and supplies, we hike down the trail to the famous Indian Gardens campsite where a large artesian spring gushes directly from the canyon wall. This will be our home, 3,000 feet below the rim, for the night. (Upon request your campsite can be changed to Cremation Canyon or Horseshoe Mesa) We will explore the area and enjoy the natural beauty during our stay. If you are staying two nights below the rim, on the second day we will day hike down to the bottom of the Canyon and visit the Colorado River, enjoying the creek along the trail as we go before returning to our Indian Gardens campsite for the night.
As we ascend on the final day, gaze back down into canyon. You can already feel exhilaration of knowing you were all the way down there, a wonderful accomplishment. Once we arrive back at the village, your guide will walk with you around the village or to various overlooks noting interesting sites before returning you to the depot for your train ride back to Williams.
