I get asked a lot about what type of camera to take on a Grand Canyon hike. Believe it or not that is a tougher question than it sounds. After all a Grand Canyon vacation is a lifetime adventure. Each time you go, whether just once or once every year, you can experience something different. Grand Canyon hikes may be filled with wildlife one day and the overwhelming sheer beauty of the geology another. Sometimes you want a camera and lens that can help you capture the small things like flowers or petroglyphs. Another trip you are photographing a bighorn or other critter with your medium length lens. And, of course, you need your landscape shots to try and capture just a piece of the magnitude of the canyon with your wide-angle lens. Don’t forget that long lens to capture that condor in the distance or perhaps your traveling companion coming down the trail behind you 100 feet.
But wait, you may already be carrying a backpack and cameras with lots of lenses can be heavy. Not to mention your video for posting online!. So perhaps just a small digital will do, but you are not sure if it gives you the flexibility you want. Have I made this even messier? Don’t worry! Your camera choice is part of your plan for the experience you are seeking. And, ultimately, your best photographs from your Grand Canyon vacation will be those taken with your eyes and stored in your heart.
