The first day of this adventure begins in Williams AZ as you board the Grand Canyon Railway. Your Discovery Treks guide will greet you at the depot in Grand Canyon Village on arrival and lead you to the Bright Angel Trailhead for the 4.5 mile hike. The trail descends over 4800 down to the canyon floor of this spectacular gorge. We will be stopping at about 3000 feet below the Rim at Indian Gardens. You will be carrying a backpack weighing 35lbs+. It will contain your personal belongings and the food and camping gear we provide.
Our expert guide will interpret the various rock layers for you during the descent in which the age of the earth is clearly outlined. The Grand Canyon is one of the very few places in the world where you can see rock layers that age back to over two billion years old, half the age of the earth!
Once we arrive at Indian Gardens, which is 3,000 feet down, it's time for a nice rest break under the shady cottonwood trees as we set camp for the evening. A large spring gushes from a cliff face in this verdant oasis. After our rest, we continue down further, now joined by the stream formed by the spring. Later in the day we will hike and explore around the area. If you are on the two night trek, on the second day, we wind down the Devil's Corkscrew, a series of exhilarating switchbacks and then on to the Colorado River. We cross the extension bridge to the north side and arrive at the Bright Angel Campground. We will enjoy lunch on the Canyon floor where you and your guide will select some special and unique areas to explore before enjoying the hike back to our campground.
On the final day it's up early and headed to the rim and the Grand Canyon Village where you will enjoy the interesting sites and history and maybe a little shopping or ice cream!
For this trip we include railway tickets (Budd class), professional backcountry guide, all necessary gear including tents, sleeping bags, Thermarest camp mattresses, camp meals prepared by your guide, park entrance fees and camping fees. Please read the What to Bring Checklist so you will have what you need with you.
