"I wanted to write and let you know what a great time my husband Patrick and I had with Sheldon on our Grand Canyon day hike. It was a very hot day at the Canyon, but we were so excited about the opportunity to hike below the Rim. We spent four hours hiking down the South Kaibab trail and then back up. Sheldon was so knowledgeable and one of the most caring people I have ever met. It felt like such a great accomplishment when we reached the top! I've done lots of hiking, but nothing compared to this trip, both in terms of difficulty and splendor! Please let Sheldon know that we had a wonderful day with him, and were incredibly impressed by the experience he provided for us. We're hoping to get back to the Canyon sometime soon for the Havasu Waterfall trip! Thanks again!"

Step 2
This trip is ideal for families, recreational hikers and train enthusiasts wanting to enjoy the world famous Grand Canyon railway and to also camp below the rim!

Share your plans with friends and family by using an ecard!Your journey starts out in historic Williams, AZ where you will board the famous Grand Canyon Railway for your transportation through the country to Grand Canyon Village. There, your Discovery Treks guide will meet you at the depot and lead you to the trailhead for your journey into the Canyon.

Staying below the rim is truly an adventure. Whether you want to enjoy one night 3000 feet below the rim, or two and visit the Canyon floor, we can build this trip for you!

On the one night trek, we leave straight from the depot after arrival to the trailhead. After equipping you with your backpack and supplies, we hike down the trail to the famous Indian Gardens campground where a large artesian spring gushes directly from the canyon wall. This will be our home 3000 feet below the rim for the night. We will explore the area and enjoy the natural beauty during our stay. If you are staying two nights below the rim, on the second day, we will dayhike down to the bottom of the Canyon and visit the Colorado River enjoying the creek along the trail as we go before returning to our campground for the night.

As we prepare to ascend on the final day when standing on the top and gazing back down into canyon below, you can already feel exhilaration of knowing you were all the way down there, a wonderful accomplishment. Once we arrive back at the Village and stash your gear, your guide will walk with you around the Village or various overlooks pointing out interesting sites before returning you to the Depot for your ride back to Williams on the Train.

On request, campground may be changed to Cremation Canyon or Horseshoe Mesa.

The trip includes the following:

  • All necessary gear and equipment (you will be carrying a backpack in excess of 30lbs)
